The 8th Peter Umeadi Cricket Championship for Obiora Odinye Cup kicked off on Thursday 26th April, 2018 at Regal Secondary School, Nri, Anambra State .

 

The championship is an annual cricket championship organized and sponsored by The Peter Umeadi Foundation for secondary schools in Anambra State. Four secondary schools participated this year. Namely:

 

Bishop Crowther Seminary , Awka.(B.C.S Team)
Regal Secondary School , Nri (R.S.S Team 1)
Regal Secondary School, Nri (R.S.S Team 2)
Comprehensive Secondary School, Nawfia (C.S.S Team)

Regal Secondary School, Nri, emerged champions after beating Bishop Crowther Seminary Awka in the finals by 4 wickets.

In the keenly contested finals played at Regal Secondary School , Regal (Team1) won the toss and elected to field in the 20 overs duel with their top contender in the state, Bishop Crowther Seminary, Awka. Regal was able to limit Bishop Crowther to 41runs all out in 10.2 overs. Udekwe Chiemerie got 4 wickets. Nwaokike Nzubechukwu and Okafor Onyebuchi also took 2 wickets each.

 

In the 2nd Innings, Bishop Crowther Seminary put up an impressive start as their opening bowler, Okocha Chidiebele, bowled a hat trick in the first over. The heat could not be sustained as Regal got to 44runs in 6.4overs, winning the game by 4 wickets to be crowned champions of this year’s tournament.

 

In the 3rd place match between Regal (Team2) and Comprehensive Secondary School, Nawfia, Comprehensive Secondary School, Nawfia could not make it on time to the venue. The game was subsequently awarded to Regal (Team 2)

 

Present at the event were the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) chairman of Regal Secondary School, Mr. Samuel Okafor, Secretary to the traditional ruler of Nri, Mr. Pascal Onyesoh and the acting principal of Regal Secondary School Nri, Mrs Uju Iguh

 

Speaking during the closing ceremony, the secretary of the Local Organizing Committe, Mr Ikem Asika congratulated the players pointing out his observation and informed them that the championship will be stronger and more competitive in the coming years.

 

Highlight of the closing ceremony included the presentation plaques and the trophy. Junior cricket equipment (wooden wickets and bats shapes )was also donated to the primary schools .

 

Full Report on Day One 26th April, 2018

The first match of the tournament was a 10 overs game between Comprehensive Secondary School Nawfia and Bishop Crowther Seminary, Awka. The game was abruptly disrupted when the heavens opened up.

 

Day two Report 27th April, 2018
BCS vs CSS, Nawfia.

1st innings
BCS won the toss and elected to field in the 10 overs match stopping CSS Nawfia at 56 runs, all out in 9.5 overs . Nyagu C. and Oleka A both got 2 wickets each.

 

In the 2nd innings, BCS got to 58 runs in 8.2 overs for the loss of 6 wickets winning the game by 5 wickets.

 

2nd match. RSS (Team 1) vs RSS (Team2)

RSS Team 2 won the toss and elected to field. RSS Team 1 scored 61runs for the loss of …. wickets at the end of their allotted 10 overs.

In the second innings, RSS Team 2 scored just 8 runs all out in 4.3overs. Udekwe E and Okafor C got 3 wickets each to help their team win by 53 runs.

3RD MATCH. BCS vs RSS 2

 

1ST innings
BCS won the toss and elected to field allowing RSS2 to score only 13 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Ifemedebe Emeka and Ezeume Ikenna tooks 3 and 2 wickets respectively.
In the 2nd innings BCS got to 14 runs in 1.5 overs winning the game by 10 wickets.

 

4th match RSS Team1 vs CSS Nawfia

1ST innings
CSS won the toss and elected to bat scoring 39 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their allotted 5 overs.

In the 2nd innings RSS1 scored 40 runs in 4.4 overs for the loss of 4 wickets. RSS1 won by 7 wickets.

 

5th match. BCS vs RSS1

In the1ST innings RSS1 won the toss and elected to field. BCS batted 46runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 5 overs.

2nd innings
RSS1 chased but was able to score just 36 runs in 5 overs for the loss of 3 wickets.
At the end BCS won by 10 runs.

 

6th match RSS2 vs CSS

1ST innings
CSS won the toss and elected to field. RSS2 scored 43 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.

In the second innings, CSS chased but could only score 36 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. BCS won by 10 runs.
