OFFICIAL REPORT OF THE NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL ZONAL ELIMINATIONS

The National Sports Festival zonal eliminations took place across 5 geo-political zones in the country. Each zone is presented one male and one female team respectively in accordance with the guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports development.

South East had earlier concluded their elimination series 1 week prior to this weekend. North West, North Central, South West, South –South all rounded up between 17th – 20th October.

Plateau State hosted the North Central eliminations, Kaduna State hosted the North West Zone, Oyo State was the venue of the South West while Delta State played host to the South-South zone.

States that participated in the zone are

  • Delta State (Male and Female)
  • Edo State (Male and Female)
  • Akwa Ibom State (Male and Female)
  • Rivers State (Male and Female)

MATCH REPORTS (MALE)

Day 1: Match 1: (DELTA vs AKWA IBOM)

Delta State won the toss and elected to bat first scoring a total of 101 runs all out in 14.4 overs.

In the second innings, Akwa Ibom could only manage a total of 38 runs all out in 16.5 overs

Delta State won by 63 Runs

  

FEMALE

Day 1: Match 2 (RIVERS STATE vs AKWA IBOM STATE)

Rivers Stat won the toss and elected to field first sending in Akwa Ibom to bat. Akwa Ibom scored a total of 59 runs all out after 14 overs.

In the second innings, Rivers State forced a chase but fell short of the required total scoring 50 runs all out in 13.5 overs.

Akwa Ibom State won by 9 runs

Day 1: Game 3 (DELTA STATE vs EDO STATE)

Edo State won the toss and elected to bat first scoring a total of 116 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs.

Favor Isiegbe scored a brilliant 42 runs not out as the best performer for Edo State.

In the second innings, Delta state could only manage a total of 63 runs all out in 17.4 overs.

Edo State won by 53 runs

 

DAY 2: MATCH 4 (MALE)

EDO STATE VS RIVERS STATE

Edo State won the toss and elected to field first sending in Rivers State to bat. Rivers State scored a total of 85 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.

In the second innings, Edo State struggled for a decent partnership and fell agonizingly short of the required total with a meager score of 31 runs all out in 10.1 overs.

Rivers State won by 54 runs

Day 2: Match 5 (FEMALE)

EDO STATE VS AKWA IBOM STATE

Akwa Ibom State won the toss and elected to field first sending in Edo State to bat. Edo State scored a total of 96 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs.

In the second innings, Akwa Ibom put up a decent performance but could not come up with the required total scoring a total of 67 runs all out in 15.5 overs.

Edo State won by 29 runs and qualifies for the National Sports Festival in December.

Day 2: Match 6 (MALE)

RIVERS STATE vs DELTA STATE

Delta State won the toss and elected to bat first scoring a total of 145 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs.

In the second innings, Rivers State could not withstand the bowling onslaught of delta and crumbled like a pack of cards managing a total of 87 runs all out in 17.5 overs

Delta State won by 58 runs and qualifies for the Festival proper in December

Summary: Delta State quailed from the male category and Edo State Qualify from the female category

 

NORTH WEST

Teams that participated are

KADUNA STATE vs JIGAWA STATE

Kaduna state won the toss and elected to bat first scoring a total of 75 runs all out in 14.1 overs.

In the second innings, Jigawa State chased down the score to record 76 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 6.1 overs.

Jigawa State won by 7 wickets

MALE

Kaduna State male team was unopposed in the zonal elimination thereby qualifying automatically.

Summary: Kaduna State will represent the zone in the male category while Jigawa State will present the female team.

SOUTH WEST

Oyo State vs Ekiti State

Ekiti State won the Toss and elected to field first sending in Oyo state to bat. Oyo State scored a total of 57 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 15 overs.

In the second innings, Oyo Ekiti State scored 50 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 15 overs

Oyo State won by 7 runs

 

Day 1 match 2 (MALE)

Oyo State vs Lagos State

Oyo State won the toss and elected to bat first scoring a total of 51 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.

In the second innings, Lagos State strolled to a comfortable victory scoring a total of 54 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 13.5 overs

Lagos State won by 7 wickets

 

Day 1: Match 3 (FEMALE)

Ogun State vs Lagos State

Ogun State won the toss and chose to field first sending in Lagos to bat. Lagos scored a total of 78 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 15 overs.

In the second innings, Ogun state could only manage a total of 36 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 15 overs.

Lagos State won by 42 runs

 

Day 2 Match 4 (MALE)

Lagos State vs Ogun State

Lagos won the toss and elected to field first sending in Ogun State to bat. Ogun State scored a total of 68 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.

In the Second Innings Lagos State scored 69 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 18.3 overs

Lagos State won by 3 wickets to qualify for the Festival in December

 

Oyo State vs Lagos State (FEMALE FINALS)

Oyo State won the toss and elected field sending in Lagos State to bat. Lagos State scored a total of 60 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 15 overs.

In the second innings, Oyo State scored a total of 32 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 15 overs.

Lagos state won by 28 runs to qualify for the festival in December

Oyo State vs Ogun State (MALE)

With the winner of the Zone already decided, both teams played for pride and bragging rights.

Ogun State won the toss and chose to bat first, surprisingly ending on 40 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 15 overs.

In the Second Innings Oyo State chased down the score to record 43 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 9.1 overs

Oyo State won by 6 wickets.

Summary: Lagos State male and female qualifies from the south west zone after winning 2 matches each from 2 games.

KWARA STATE VS NIGER STATE

Toss was awarded to Kwara State after Niger State failed to show up in time for toss

Kwara State elected to bat first and scored a total of 107 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 15 overs.

In the second innings, Niger State could only muster a total of 63 runs all out in 12.3 overs

Kwara State won by 44 runs

 

Match 2

NIGER STATE VS PLATEAU STATE

Plateau State won the toss and elected to bat first scoring a total of 107 runs all out in 14.2 overs.

In the second innings, Niger State scored a total of 57 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 15 overs

Plateau State won by 50 runs.

Match 3 (FINALS)

KWARA STATE VS PLATEAU STATE

Plateau State won the toss and elected to field first sending in Kwara State to bat. Kwara State scored a total of 89 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 15 overs.

In the second innings, Plateau state put up a decent performance but fell short of the required total with a score of 55 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 15 overs.

Kwara State won by 34 runs to qualify for the National Sports Festival in December.

FEMALE

Plateau state being the only female team that arrived for the preliminary qualified automatically.

Summary: Plateau will present the female team from the zone while Kwara State will present the male team
