South-South Female League begins, History made.

The South-South Female League is the Brian child of the Chairman, Edo State Cricket Association, South-South Representative on the Board of NCF and Vice President of Federation Mr Uyi Akpata. With his philanthropism, Passion and constitutional responsibility via PETS Foundation, Mr Akpata’s vision is to use available manpower resources to discover, harness, develop and promote Female Cricket primarily in the South-South region and by extension, Nigeria at large. Sponsoring the 1st ever Women’s league in Nigeria and North-West Africa became inevitable in order to engage talents that are produced from the zone.

 

Understanding the Importance of Gender balance in the growth and development of Cricket in Nigeria and in line with the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) policy on Women’s Cricket, the South-South Women’s league will provide the platform for Female Cricketers around the country to participate in a league structure that ensures equal involvement in Cricket games and competition as much as the Male contemporaries. The 8 team structure also meets the criteria of the ICC senior tournament for it to be recorded in the high performance scorecard of Nigeria.

 

The Sponsor, Mr Uyi Akpata, expressed satisfaction in the structure of the league and its administration thus far. “I am excited that the league has commenced. This league will provide a competition’s platform for Women’s Cricket to thrive in the zone and also in Nigeria. The gender balance of equal involvement in the Men and Women’s Cricket is very key to the overall development of the sport in Nigeria. This comes also on the backdrop of numerous local and international engagements expected to be embarked on by various State senior and National Women’s team in 2021 he said”.

 

Eight Clubs are scheduled to participate in the league, 3 clubs from Edo State, 2 Clubs from Akwa Ibom State, 1 club each from Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta State respectively. Edo State will feature Adolor Amazons, Idia Royals and Ekpoma Supernova, while Akwa Ibom State will feature Rangers and Smashers. Others include Dazagon from Bayelsa, Delta Force from Delta and Pathfinders from Rivers State.

The league has been structured into 2 zones namely A and B. Adolor Amazons, Ekpoma Supernovas Idia Royals and Delta Force in Zone A will lock horns at Iyoba College Benin City in Edo State, While Dazagon, Pathfinders, Rangers and Smashers in Zone B will trade tackle at The University of Port Harcourt Cricket pitch, Rivers state. The format for the league is round robin with the best 2 from each zone playing a super 4 series to determine 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd placed positions.
