Nigeria Women’s team was looking to bounce back from the defeat against Namibia in their 3rd match against Uganda to salvage any hope of qualifying for the semi-final in Group B.
Uganda won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring a total of 104 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.
Nigeria’s performance with the ball in the first innings could be considered as the most improved and outstanding display from a fielding team with only 9 extras and constantly putting Uganda on the back foot.
Taiwo Abduquadri, Joy Efosa and Mary Desmond all got 2 wickets each at crucial times to ensure Uganda never had a breakaway moment.
Immaculate Nakissuyi and Stephani Namphina both scored 22 runs, supported by Irene Alumo with 21 runs and Rita Musamali with 18 runs as the best bating figures for Uganda.
The second innings started brightly for Nigeria as the opening Batters, Abdulquari Taiwo, Esther Sandy and Omonye Asika ensured that Nigeria sat comfortably at 39 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in 8 overs.
Like a horror movie scene, Nigeria lost the next 4 wickets in 2 overs scoring 3 runs under the most bizarre circumstance, losing wickets by Run-Outs which eventually gifted Uganda the game where all hope had been lost. Wickets tumbled every other over as Nigeria finished with an unbelievable meager score of 61 runs all out in 14.5 overs, recording a 5th run out.
The earlier bating performance by Omonye Asika and Esther Sandy with 13 runs each was dampened by the overall result to leave a bitter pill in our mouths and a day to forget.
Uganda won by 43 runs
Nigeria will look to shake off the painful defeat when they square up against Cameroon on Monday 13th September in their 4thand Final group B’ fixture.
