Rwanda maintains pressure on Nigeria with impressive win against Sierra Leone

• Rwanda makes it 2 wins from as many matches to maintain tournament momentum.

• Giselle Ishimwe from Rwanda hits 41 runs to earn her player of match against Sierra Leone.

• Ghana too strong as they beat The Gambia by 106 runs to record 1st win in the tournament

 

Match 1 🙁 Rwanda vs Sierra Leone 9:30am)

On the back of a very impressive win on match day 1, Rwanda looked fresh coming into the game after resting on match Day 2 as prescribed in the tournament fixtures. Sierra Leone on the other hand was looking to build on their impressive display in the win against Ghana on match day 2 as they won the toss and elected to bat first.

Sierra Leone struggled from ball 1 to muster a decent partnership as the Rwanda opening bowlers proved too strong for them. Wickets fell every other over to leave them on just 17 runs for the loss of 4 wickets after the power play overs. A little spark in the middle of the innings from Fatu Pessima and Mabinty Sankoh, but it was short lived to see Sierra Leone restricted to 71 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.

Zainab Kamara, scored 12 runs, supported by Fatu Pessima and Mabinty Sankoh with 10 runs respectively, as the best batting performance for Sierra Leone.

Ingabire Sifa and Muhawinemana of Rwanda both had 2 wickets, conceding 14 runs at piece in 4 overs respectively.

 

In the run chase, Rwanda paced their innings as Giselle Ishimwe and Uwera Sarah controlled the game from ball 1 by rotating strike and scoring the boundaries at will. Giselle lost her wicket in the closing stage of the innings but not without scoring a brilliant 41 runs off 38 balls. Uwera Sarah and Uwamahoro Cathia saw the team over the finish line with the former scoring 18 runs.

Rwanda scored the required run rate of 72 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in 11.5 overs.

Zainab Kamara got the only wicket for Sierra Leone in her first over.

*Match 2: (Ghana vs The Gambia)*

With Pride and bragging rights at stake, Ghana and The Gambia approached the game with some anxiety as both teams had failed to record a win so far in the tournament.

Ghana won the toss and elected to bat first, posting the biggest total of the tournament thus far with a total of 149 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. A couple of decent all round batting performances from the team saw Felicia Serwaa leading from the front with 28 runs off 28 balls, supported by Elizabeth Annor with 19 runs off 23 balls, Rashidath Salia with 19 off 32 balls and finally Kate Awuah with 15 runs off 14 balls. Worthy of mention is that Felicia Serwaa struck the first 6 of the tournament.

Soseh Sano was the best performer with the ball for The Gambia with 3 wickets, conceding 28 runs in 4 overs.

In the second innings, The Gambia struggled in their run chase attempt but the fall of wickets were their biggest undoing as they lost 3 wickets for 23 runs in the power play overs.

Wickets fell every other over as the batting line-up continued to crumble; at the end of 10 overs The Gambia had lost 8 wickets for just 40 runs to signal that their 2^nd defeat in the tournament was inevitable.

The Gambia eventually finished with 43 runs all out in 11 overs.

Janet Alaree got 3 wickets, conceding 9 runs in 3 overs and Beatrice Oduro got 2 wickets in 2 overs, conceding 4 runs as the best bowling statistics for team The Gambia.
