It was a memorable day in Onitsha when Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) and ArchBishop Onyemelukwe Memorial Secondary School emerged Champions of the 2023 edition of the Diocese on the Niger Secondary Schools Cricket Championship held in Onitsha, Anambra State.

 

The finals of the events that took place on Saturday, February 18, 2022 saw DMGS Onitsha winning the boys category while the ArchBishop Onyemelukwe Memorial Sec. School Onitsha won the Girls category.

 

After the round robin encounters, ArchBishop Onyemelukwe Mem. Sec Sch came first with 6 points (2 wins) while the Anglican Girls Grammar School, Onitsha came 2nd with 3 points. Anglican Girls Gram.. Sch. Ogidi came 3rd. for Girls Secondary Schools

For Boys Secondary Schools, DMGS Onitsha, one of the premier schools that played the game in the state came tops while Patterson Mem. Gram. School came 2nd and Arch Bishop Onyemelukwe Mem. Secondary School took the 3rd Position. St Christopher’s School withdrew from the competition midway.

 

According to the brain behind the Cricket project in Onitsha and environ, Sir Victor Nwangwu, our target is to revive the game of Cricket within Onitsha and environ as a way of using cricket to develop future leaders of the country. “Cricket is a game that teaches values and we want to ensure that our children benefit from this noble and interesting game”.  Sir Nwangwu stated.

 

The Secretary of Anambra State Cricket Association, Mr. Osita Obijiofor was at the venue to witness the events that attracted many students, teachers and admirers of the game.
