The Nigeria Cricket Federation deeply mourns the passing of Late Col. (Rtd.) Walter Jibunoh, a distinguished sportsman, officer, and gentleman, whose contributions to the growth and history of Nigerian cricket remain indelible.
Col. Jibunoh was a central figure in the golden era of Nigerian cricket. As a key player of the renowned Dyaks Cricket Club in Lagos during the 1960s and 1970s, he epitomised excellence as a genuine all-rounder — a dependable left-arm batter, an elegant medium-pace bowler, and a safe pair of hands in the slips. He went on to represent Nigeria with distinction, featuring in international matches alongside some of the nation’s finest cricketers, including the famous victory over Sierra Leone in 1965 at the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval, witnessed by the late President Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.
He also captained the Lagos Men’s Team and, as a proud alumnus of King’s College, combined sportsmanship with leadership and discipline. Regarded by many as the most gentlemanly cricketer of his generation, Col. Jibunoh carried himself with dignity, humour, and an enduring love for the game, he remained a passionate supporter of the game, often attending matches to cheer on the players. Notably, he was present at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifiers held at the Tafawa Balewa Square and UNILAG Ovals in April this year, where his presence was a source of encouragement and inspiration to the team and the wider cricket community.
The Nigeria Cricket Federation acknowledges with deep respect his immense impact on the sport, his exemplary service, and his lasting legacy. On behalf of the entire Nigerian cricket family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and associates. May the Almighty grant them strength and may his soul rest in perfect peace.
