The Nigeria Cricket Federation warmly congratulates its former President, Professor Yahaya Ukwenya, on being honoured with the Sports Legendary Award 2026, presented on 2nd July 2026 at the Chelsea Hotel, CBD, Abuja.

This recognition is a well-deserved celebration of Professor Ukwenya’s immense contribution to the growth of cricket in Nigeria. During his time as President, he played a key role in shaping the direction of the sport, helping to build a stronger foundation for the game and opening the door to many of the milestones Nigerian cricket continues to enjoy today. One of the standout moments of his tenure was Nigeria’s historic appearance at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa in 2020 , a landmark achievement that remains a proud moment for the cricket family in Nigeria.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Ukwenya reflected on the work done during his tenure, describing it as “a significant turning point for Nigerian cricket” and one that laid “a solid foundation for future growth.” He also expressed his joy at the progress the game has continued to make, noting that it is encouraging to see the current board building on that foundation and taking Nigerian cricket to even greater heights.

He also spoke proudly about one of the defining moments in the sport’s journey, the women’s team qualifying for the Cricket U19 World Cup in 2025. For him, what once felt like a distant dream has now become a reality, and that achievement stands as a testament to the hard work, belief, and dedication of everyone who has contributed to the game over the years.

The Nigeria Cricket Federation celebrates this honour with Professor Ukwenya and sincerely appreciates his service, leadership, and commitment to the development of cricket in Nigeria.
