The stage is set for a defining moment in Nigerian cricket history as the inaugural edition of the Nigeria Super League (NSL) officially bowls off from May 16 to May 31, 2026, at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval.
Organized under the leadership of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, the Nigeria Super League is designed to usher in a new era of elite domestic cricket competition, talent development, fan engagement, and commercial growth for the sport across the country.
Speaking on the significance of the competition, the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation described the league as a transformational project aimed at elevating Nigerian cricket to new heights while creating a sustainable pathway for players to compete at the highest level.
The inaugural season will feature six franchise teams representing different regions of the country:
Central Eagles, Eastern Elephants, Middlebelt Tigers, Northern Lions, Southern Sharks, and Western Dolphins.
Each franchise is made up of 14 players alongside two technical officials, carefully assembled to ensure competitive balance, regional representation, and high-performance cricket throughout the tournament.
In a major milestone ahead of the tournament, the league successfully hosted its maiden Player Draft on Saturday 9th May, where franchise captains and coaches were given the opportunity to strategically build their squads from a pool of the nation’s finest cricket talents.
The draft process reflected the league’s commitment to structure, competitiveness, and player specialization, with selections made across key cricketing roles including:
Elite Opening Batter, Core Opening Batter, Elite Middle Order Batter, Core Middle Order Batter, Elite All-Rounder, Core All-Rounder, Elite Pace Bowler, Core Pace Bowler, Elite Spin Bowler, Core Spin Bowler, Development Players
